A vacancy-count discrepancy candidates must check
The detailed notification states the total as 1,215 vacancies across all RRBs, confirmed from the official PDF. Some summaries of the notice note that the Annexure-B category rows — Unreserved 542, Scheduled Caste 176, Scheduled Tribe 104, Other Backward Classes (Non-Creamy Layer) 296 and Economically Weaker Sections 147 — add up to 1,265, which does not match the notification's own total. Follow the official total of 1,215 unless a corrigendum appears.
Where the posts are
Posts are spread across railway zones, and candidates apply to only one RRB. The largest allocations are Mumbai (Central Railway) 125, Jammu-Srinagar (Northern Railway) 122, Chennai (Southern Railway) 119, Thiruvananthapuram (Southern Railway) 114, Prayagraj (North Central Railway) 104 and Bengaluru (South Western Railway) 102. Applying to more than one RRB leads to rejection and debarment, according to the summaries.
Who can apply
The post is graduate-level. Candidates must hold a bachelor's degree from a recognised university or an equivalent qualification as on the closing date, 25 November 2026; candidates awaiting final results on or before that date are not eligible, the summaries state. The normal age limit is 20 to 33 years as on 1 January 2027, meaning, for Unreserved and Economically Weaker Section candidates, a date of birth not earlier than 2 January 1994 and not later than 1 January 2007. Relaxations apply for eligible categories, including three years for Other Backward Classes (Non-Creamy Layer) and five years for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates. The summaries reviewed do not state a separate route for applicants from outside India; confirm the nationality clause in the detailed notice itself.
Pay, duties and the medical standard
Station Master is placed at Level 6 of the 7th Central Pay Commission, with an initial basic pay of Rs. 35,400 per month plus applicable allowances, the summaries state. It is an operational safety role: station masters coordinate train movements, follow safety and signalling rules, and maintain operational records. Candidates must meet Medical Standard A-2, and the summaries state that candidates who have undergone Lasik surgery or any other refractive-error correction surgery are ineligible for that standard. Those who do not meet it cannot be offered an alternative post, so check the medical condition before paying the fee.
How selection works
Selection has four stages. First is a single-stage written test of 100 questions for 100 marks in 120 minutes: basic science, mathematical and analytical capability (60 questions), logical capability (20) and mental reasoning (20). Negative marking deducts one-third of a mark per incorrect answer. Minimum qualifying percentages are 40 percent for Unreserved and Economically Weaker Section candidates, 30 percent for Other Backward Classes (Non-Creamy Layer) and Scheduled Caste candidates, and 25 percent for Scheduled Tribe candidates. Those shortlisted, up to eight times the vacancy count, take the aptitude test. Only aptitude-test qualifiers enter the final merit, weighted 70 percent written test and 30 percent aptitude test. Document verification and the medical examination follow. The examination date has not been announced.
Fees and refunds
The fee is Rs. 500 for most candidates and Rs. 250 for women, transgender candidates, ex-servicemen, Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, Persons with Benchmark Disabilities, minority-community and Economically Backward Class candidates. It is refundable, minus bank charges, for candidates who appear in the written test: Rs. 400 of the Rs. 500 fee, and the full Rs. 250 for the reduced-fee categories. Refunds go only to bank accounts seeded with the candidate's Aadhaar number through the NPCI portal, the summaries state. Fee payment closes on 27 November 2026, and the modification window runs from 28 November 2026 to 7 December 2026 for a Rs. 250 modification fee.
How to apply
- Read the detailed CEN 08/2026 on the RRB website and confirm the vacancy table and your category rules.
- Go to rrbapply.gov.in and create an account with a valid mobile number and email address, which cannot be changed later.
- Select one RRB, enter zone preferences carefully, and fill in details exactly as on your certificates.
- Capture a live photograph on a plain white background and upload a running-handwriting signature in black ink on white paper; capital-letter signatures lead to rejection, the summaries state.
- Pay the fee online, submit before 11:59 pm on 25 November 2026, and download the confirmation copy.
- Track later updates, including the examination date and call letters, only on the official RRB website.
Apply safely
Apply only through rrbapply.gov.in and pay the fee only through that portal. The boards appoint no agents to collect applications, and nobody can sell a Station Master post. Anyone asking for payment beyond the published fee, or promising selection, a preferred zone or a call letter, is not acting for the Railway Recruitment Boards. Candidates in Nepal should verify the nationality clause in the detailed notice before paying any fee or sharing documents with any intermediary. The notification was confirmed from the official RRB website, and its total of 1,215 posts is the figure used above.
